The calendar turned. A new year began.
But for Jamaica’s hurricane survivors, January brought no fresh start.
Tents and makeshift shelters deteriorated under the sun and rain. Schools struggled to reopen because children were displaced or too hungry to focus. Unemployment remained crushing, leaving families trapped in survival mode with no path forward.
This is the stage of disaster recovery most people never see—the long, grinding months after emergency relief fades. When donations slow. When help becomes scarce. When hope feels fragile.
Babies continue to die quietly. People continue to starve quietly. Families continue to be homeless quietly.
Silence doesn’t mean the crisis is over.
It just means fewer people are watching.
